CELEBRATING ESQUIMALT LAGOON: Honouring Coast Salish History – A Healing Journey of Reconciliation

Date and time TBA
Esquimalt Lagoon/Coburg Peninsula (foot of Lagoon Road)

Come celebrate the installation of an 8’ X 10’ cedar mural by Songhees master carver, Butch Dick. The mural marks a significant burial site discovered in 2005, and will be the City of Colwood’s first public art honouring the history of the Coast Salish Peoples.

The mural will welcome visitors arriving at Esquimalt Lagoon and the Coburg Peninsula and honour the diversity of sacred cultural sites that have been disturbed and built over in recent years. The design features images of the Moon, eagles, heron, the forest, and figures representing the Lagoon’s familiar winds.

Ceremonies will include community cultural leaders who share a commitment to First Nations reconciliation and renewed respect among all peoples and toward our shared natural environment.

For more information on this special community eco-cultural event (including sponsorship opportunities), please contact cindy@colwoodcommunityplace.ca

About the artist: Butch Dick is a master carver trained in fine art and graphic design. He taught First Nations Art and Culture in the Victoria School District for more than 20 years, and is currently an Assistance Professor at the University of Victoria, teaching an Indigenous Learning course. Butch Dick also trained his two sons, Clarence Dick Jr. and Bradley Dick in the art of carving. Father and sons work closely together on aboriginal art projects.

This community cultural initiative is generously supported by the Province of British Columbia, through a BC 150 Grant honouring 150 years of shared history in British Columbia (1858 through 2008), and through the efforts of the Esquimalt Lagoon Enhancement Association, the Esquimalt Lagoon Stewardship Initiative (ELSI), City of Colwood, Capital Regional District, Essencia at Esquimalt Lagoon (Havenwood), West Shore Chamber of Commerce and Royal Roads University.

If you are among the growing numbers who believe regular outdoor activity with other like-minded people can improve one’s health, fitness and life in general, then the Juan de Fuca Pathfinders Walking Club may be just what you are looking for. We are a lively group of ordinary people of all ages and walks of life, who love strolling in nature and believe the physical activity and social contact we have discovered through Pathfinders has made a positive impact on our lives.

Pathfinders is part of a global movement known as Volkssporting, a popular European pastime involving non-competitive, outdoor sports for fitness and fun. Although Volkssport also includes cycling, cross-country skiing and swimming in many parts of the world, walking and hiking clubs are the most common focus of North American clubs.

Pathfinders organizes community walks through historically significant areas and some of the most picturesque natural places on Earth. Walks are usually in the neighborhood of 5-10 kilometres, with water and rest stops en route. Longer distances are also offered for the more serious walkers. The club offers walks in several areas throughout the region, some annual events with fellow club members, guided walks hosted by other clubs, or solo walks that can be taken any day of the year (on your own, or with one of your new walking buddies!). Club members can participate in events and complete walks which make them eligible to receive International Achievement Awards (IAA’s.) Awards are based on the number of events
walkers complete, as well as how many kilometers they walk. Participants receive special pins, commemorative patches and certificates to mark their accomplishments.

Colwood Community Green Map and Colwood Community Place

Colwood Community Place (CCP) is a local living network intended to help people discover ways they can go green, go local, grow local veggies and our local economy while building a thriving community. The website offers a storehouse of connections that make sustainable living easier to achieve. Visit www.colwoodcommunityplace.ca

A major element of CCP 2010 scope of work is the Colwood Community Green Map, which is also an important feature of the Emily Carr Festival’s outreach activities.

Colwood Community Green Map
From charting epic voyages of discovery to helping us find our way around today's real and virtual worlds, maps have played a pivotal role in human history. Maps are also a powerful tool for helping cities celebrate their unique stories and plan greener futures. We are mapping Colwood’s special stories and places. Look for the map at our festival events throughout Spring 2010. Our current aim is to release the map in time for Colwood’s official birthday on June 24th. Want to know more?
