FIRED UP! Contemporary Works in Clay
The Pot as a Metaphor for the Human Form
Fired-Up! members have earned a reputation for displaying excellence and innovation in the ceramic arts. The THEME this year will be Bellies, Bodies, Feet and Necks, or BBFN, exploring the anatomy of a pot. Potters refer to bottoms, bellies, feet and necks while throwing or hand building a clay vessel or form. Other parts that one may ponder are mouths, lips and shoulders whilst creating proportion and balance. Fourteen potters share an array of talents at this much-anticipated annual show, with work ranging from large figurative sculptures, mixed media wall pieces to decorate and functional pottery.

Exhibiting will be Pat Webber, Susan Delatour LePoidevin, Gordon Hutchens, Kinichi Shigeno, Alan Burgess, Cathi Jefferson, Gary Merkel, Meira Mathison and Meg Burgess, as well as 5 invited guests - Tobias Tomlinson, Elaine Brewer White, Sue Hara, Judy Weeden, and Sarah Lawless. Come meet the artists and see the outstanding work the last weekend in May, or take in the show's Opening Night on Friday, May 28th.

Fisgard 150 Celebration – June 11 & 12!

Come celebrate the 150th birthday of our lighthouse!

Fisgard LighthouseSince 1860, Fisgard Lighthouse has been guiding mariners safely home to Victoria and Esquimalt, and on June 11 & 12 Parks Canada welcomes you to her birthday party. We’ll also be helping the Canadian Navy celebrate their 100th anniversary, so it will take a full two days to pack in all the fun.

The party begins on Friday, June 11. Come and enjoy food, music and great local art on a distinctly local theme while you explore the fort and lighthouse. Take in firearms demonstrations and kids’ games or talk to volunteers in period costume about the sites’ history. Take part in a lantern-making workshop while you get ready for the magical Luminara Lantern Festival nighttime tribute to Fisgard, capped with a grand fireworks finale in the skies over Esquimalt Harbour.

The party continues on Saturday with an International Naval Review, an appearance by the Snowbirds and the grand opening of Fisgard’s new exhibits. There will be dozens of international ships anchored just offshore, so there’s something for everyone at this special one-of-a-kind community celebration!

Exciting new hands-on displays, recently discovered historical tidbits and a restored look and feel will delight former and first-time visitors. Remember, Fisgard is not only the oldest lighthouse on the west coast, it is also one of the oldest homes in Victoria.

Call (250) 478-5849 for more details.
